I've spent quite a bit of time looking into free hosting and domain name options over the years. Having not that much money to be able to afford hosting or a domain name I wondered whether it was possible to setup a website without actually having to purchase
anything. From constant research and testing of different hosting/domain sites I can say it is quite possible to setup a website for free.
Now before you get too excited there are going to be a few drawbacks for getting things for free. Firstly, don't be expecting to have a super fast website. Most free hosting options are pretty slow due so be aware that this will have an impact on your website and attracting an audience. Also a free hosting package may not have all the necessary features that a paid hosting account would have.
Free websites are probably better suited to people who want to setup a website to see how it goes then maybe switch to a paid hosting service once you have setup the basics of your website. Definately not designed for people who are expecting a large amount of traffic to their website.

I like to organise my search results in terms of features rating. This gives you the best webhosts based on a variety of features that are rated.
ByetHost (http://www.byethost.com/) is one of the free hosting services that I have used and I am resonably happy service. You get 5.5GB worth of space, ftp upload, 200GB bandwidth and they have no ads. I've only been using this one for about a month so I'm unable to give you a long term review on the hosting but many other people have also rated this free hosting highly.
FREE DOMAINS
Free domains are a bit harder to get a hold of than free hosting. There are a few good options here such as .tk domains or .co.cc domains. I've used both of these and haven't had any trouble with them.If your looking for a free .com domain there is one place that I have found and I'm sure there are a few more out there. Now I haven't tested this one out so I would love people's input into whether this is actually do able or not. The site is Free Domain Site which offer people free domains. Basically you have to complete some surveys in order to gain domain points. Once you have aquired enough domain points you would be able to get your free domain. They claim that you will not have to use your credit card either. If you want to test it out click on more and then Register.
